Making sense of your garbage collection invoice should not require a Ph.D. in economics. Waste collection can involve various costs, such as waste disposal taxes and hazardous waste collection fees. This guide provides an overview of some of the common expenses associated with waste collection.

It is important to note that some specific taxes and fees are imposed at the municipal, provincial, or even federal levels. Waste management providers are obliged to collect them.

One of the benefits of using a private garbage collection company for waste management services is customizing your services. Whether you require residential or commercial garbage and recycling services, our team can make sure that you are only paying for the services you need.

Rather than paying for one-size-fits-all garbage collection, a private collection company can find opportunities for cost savings. All the while, we’ll dependably take garbage, recycling, and hazardous waste disposal off your hands.

Does waste disposal have GST?

Yes, federal GST tax is collected on waste disposal. It’s a question that we get from clients who ask us: why is there GST on waste disposal? In short, waste disposal is not GST exempt. The collection of federal GST on garbage collection is required by businesses.

Alberta residents, of course, do not pay PST. In Saskatchewan, there is no PST on the disposal of waste.

If you have municipal garbage collection, then the “tax” on your waste is collected through your property taxes.

Rural residents can pay a waste disposal fee at their transfer station, or they can arrange for Rural Garbage Collection.

What is the hazardous waste disposal tax?

There are additional disposal and treatment surcharges on hazardous materials. Waste classified as hazardous must be managed according to the standards and rules established by all applicable regulations.

Hazardous waste includes paints, solvents, batteries, and electronics and comes from both households and commercial businesses. Since these items can be harmful to humans and the environment, it is important that they are diverted from landfills where possible.

The taxes and fees collected for hazardous waste disposal cover the additional costs associated with this very specific material. Hazardous waste management involves specific rules around handling, storing, transporting, treating, and disposing of waste. This applies both to waste generated by residential or private companies.

Local Environmental handles any complicated logistics associated with the collection, transport, and disposal of many types of hazardous material. For example, asbestos can only be transported once to limit multi-site contamination. Local Environmental makes it safe and easy to dispose of asbestos. We’ll handle every step from collection, handling, and drop off at approved hazardous material facilities.

How does waste management recyclable material offset work?

The Recyclable Material Offset applies to recycling collection customers. It is a waste removal cost adjustment that is calculated based on the value of processed recyclables.

As the value of processed recyclables exceeds costs associated with processing, an adjustment or credit is applied. This offset is a win-win for clients and the environment. It encourages further recycling to offset costs and diverts waste from landfills wherever possible.
